How full should I fill my salt tank?

Since salt is an essential variable in soft water, our employees are often asked, “How much salt should I put in my salt tank when filling it?”

A family of 4 or more can fill the salt tank full, but it is strongly recommended the salt tank not be filled until water can be seen at the bottom of the salt tank.  Why?  If the salt tank is filled full and continually topped off with a few bags of salt, it can cause a salt bridge.

In homes with three or fewer people and use little water, we recommend the salt tank is filled ½ way.  Why?  Since these homes tend not to use as much water as a larger family, it will take longer for salt to be depleted.  The longer it takes for the salt to be consumed, there is an increased chance of a salt bridge or mushing at the bottom of the salt tank.

Before you refill your salt tank with more salt, make sure you see water in the bottom of the salt tank.  Why?  It will prevent your salt tank from bridging and creating a service call.  It is best to use all the salt in your salt tank before adding more.
